Basic Home Wellness Care

¨  Increase your water intake

¨  Boil water with freshly cut ginger and add lemon and honey (ginger: to breakdown and expel mucus; lemon: rich in Vitamin C; honey: antibacterial & antiviral and soothes a sore throat)

¨  Drink hot water with apple cider vinegar (1 tsp) and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper (The vinegar is alkalizing which can balance body pH if too acidic, reducing inflammation; cayenne pepper is very warming and rich in Vitamin C)

¨  Eat warming foods

¨  Get lots of rest and sleep; sunshine for Vitamin D

¨  Continue with slow, gentle exercise or stretch to facilitate movement of lymph only if you normally exercise. (However now is not the time to start exercising, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A FEVER!!!).

¨  Take a hot bath then wrap up to sweat the pathogens out of your system. (Don’t wet your hair or stay in for too long.)

¨  Gargle with warm salt water.

¨  Neti pot:  always boil water first, then allow to cool before using.

Supplements which help:

¨  Vitamin C

¨  Garlic -nature’s antibiotic

¨  Echinacea & Goldenseal–Echinacea: helps to fight infection; Goldenseal inhibits mucus formation. Do not take continuously.

¨  Grapefruit seed extract stimulates your immune system

¨  Zinc/Echinacea lozenges–for sore throats

Daily wellness tips:

¨  Avoid all processed foods—reduce intake of wheat, sugar and dairy; raw dairy ok.

¨  Eat lots of organic vegetables and some fruit in as many different colors as you can

¨  Begin every day with a freshly made juice—leafy greens with a little carrot, apple, and ginger root

¨  Avoid animal products that contain growth hormones or antibiotics

¨  Eat sprouted seeds daily

 

 

 

Important information

  • This is a short list of some popular remedies for the common cold, coughs and flu. There are other helpful remedies and using a reference book will help.
  • There are many good reference books for homeopathic self care for minor complaints (many available on Amazon.com).
  • These natural medicines can be obtained from the health food store in 30C potency.
  • Give three pellets of 30C every four hours until you see improvement.
  • If there is no improvement after three doses, give a different medicine.
  • After you first notice improvement, give another dose only if symptoms begin to return.
  • Lower potencies (6x, 6C, 30X) may need to be given more often (every two to four hours).
  • Higher potencies (200X, 200C) generally need to be given only once. Consult a professional homeopath for any questions or concerns regarding usage and what to expect.
  • Follow important guidelines for the most effective results…
    • Do not eat, drink, smoke, or use toothpaste for 15 minutes before or after taking the remedy.
    • Do not drink coffee, decaffeinated or otherwise
    • Do not use any products containing camphor (Vicks, Tiger Balm, Blistex, Ben-Gay, etc.)
    • Avoid dental work which involves drilling, grinding or ultrasonic cleaning.
    • Store in a cool, dry place away from bright light or sunlight (not the refrigerator) and  temperatures above 120 degrees F
    • All of the above can antidote the action of the homeopathic remedies.
    • Do not touch pellets directly with hands but use lid to pour them into your mouth
    • Place under tongue (sub-lingual) and allow them to dissolve.

 

Homeopathic Medicines for Colds

Aconitum napellus

¨  Used within 24 hours of onset of cold symptoms; high fever that comes on suddenly

¨  Colds that come on after exposure to cold, dry wind

¨  Colds that come on after a fright or shocking event

¨  Very fearful, anxious and restless mood; face is flushed and pupils constricted

¨  Thirst for cold drinks

Allium cepa

¨  A profuse watery nasal discharge that drips like a faucet

¨  Nasal discharge burns and irritates nose and upper lip

¨  Bland tears streaming from eyes, although eyes may smart

¨  Feels better in fresh air or cold room; feels worse in a warm room

Kali bichromicum

¨  Thick, stringy, yellow-green nasal discharge

¨  Sinus pressure with thick postnasal drip

¨  Colds that develop into sinus infections

¨  Wandering aches and pains in small spots

¨  Nasal sounding voice

¨  Cough: rattling sound, gagging from thick mucus in throat

¨  Worse in morning on waking and when exposed to cold

¨  Croupy cough

¨  Late stage or ripe colds

Natrum muriaticum

¨  Thick, profuse clear nasal discharge (like uncooked white of egg)

¨  Runny nose alternating with blocked nose

¨  Violent sneezing

¨  Lips dry and cracked

¨  Headache in the forehead

¨  Worse in sun or warm, stuffy rooms

¨  Better outside in fresh air; cool bathing

Pulsatilla

¨  Loose cough in the morning and dry at night

¨  A ripe cold with thick, bland mucus

¨  Loss of sense of smell and taste

¨  Stopped up nose in warm room and in evening

¨  Frequent sneezing

¨  Better from fresh air

¨  Mood is weepy, affectionate and clingy

¨  Desires company  when sick

 

Homeopathic Medicines for Coughs

Antimonium tartaricum

¨  Loose, rattling cough without much mucus coming up

¨  Coughs and bronchitis in infants and the elderly

¨  Bronchial tubes are full of mucus

¨  Breathing is rapid, short and difficult

¨  Feels better getting the mucus out

¨  Coarse rattling in chest or larynx

¨  Child can be irritable, whining, and wants to be alone

Bryonia

¨  Painful cough, worse from any movement

¨  Feels better for holding the chest when coughing

¨  Extremely dry chapped lips and mouth

¨  Very thirsty for large amounts of cold water

¨  Cough aggravated by eating and drinking

¨  Dry, hacking cough in evening and night

Drosera

¨  Violent fits of hard coughing with choking

¨  Can barely breathe while coughing

¨  Dry, spasmodic cough that can result in gagging or vomiting

¨  Cough from a sensation of dryness and irritation in the larynx,

¨  Feels as if there are crumbs or a feather in throat

Rumex crispus

¨  Dry, tickling cough that prevents sleep

¨  Cough from a tickle in the throat or rawness in the larynx or trachea

¨  Coughs as soon as head touches pillow

¨  Worse from uncovering and inhaling cold air

¨  Hoarse, barking, paroxysmal, tiring cough

 

Spongia tosta

¨  Hollow cough like a barking seal or saw cutting through wood

¨  Dry, croupy cough with hoarseness

¨  Throat dry and constricted, suffocating feeling

¨  Feeling of a plug in the larynx with anxious breathing

¨  Scanty expectoration which tastes salty

¨  Made worse in warm room

¨  Made better from warm drinks and sitting up

Homeopathic Medicines for Flu

 

Arsenicum album

¨  Stomach flu with diarrhea and vomiting

¨  Thirsty for small sips of water

¨  Very chilly  with great prostration

¨  Thin, watery, burning discharge from nose

¨  Anxious about health

¨  Fastidious even when sick

 

Bryonia

¨  Needs to remain still, cannot tolerate any movement

¨  Extremely dry chapped lips and mouth

¨  Very thirsty for large amounts of cold water

¨  Motion or cough causes pain in chest and severe headache

Eupatorium perfoliatum

¨  Deep aching in the bones and muscles

¨  Sore and bruised as if bones are broken

¨  Eyes are aching and sore

¨  Chill followed by heat and sweating

¨  Very thirsty for cold water

¨  Feels worse from cold air, smell of food, and movement

¨  Better from rest, warmth and perspiration

Gelsemium

¨  Dizzy, drowsy, droopy and dull

¨  Dull pain and chills up and down spine

¨  Exhausting flu, wants to lie down and sleep

¨  Heaviness of eyelids

¨  Difficulty concentrating

¨  Dry, hot fever without thirst

¨  Worse from change of weather from dry to cold damp

¨  Better from open air and stimulants

 

Oscillococcinum “Ossies”

¨  The number one choice for OTC medicine for flu

¨  If taken at first sign of flu, can significantly reduce duration and intensity of symptoms

¨  Indicated for fever, chills, body aches and pains

¨  A good choice when there are no other defining symptoms than these indicated

¨  Need only take about 1/3 of vial per dose, not entire contents as indicated

Colds develop for a number of reasons including:

a) Your body’s way of telling you to slow down

b) Your immune system is compromised

c) A cleansing or spring cleaning of the body

Most of the time, if your immune system is strong and if you get enough rest or fluids, colds will go away on their own. Many people actually feel better after their cold has been resolved than they did before they got sick, as the pathogen stimulates the immune system and toxins are eliminated.

When to get help with your cold:

¨  If your cold is associated with a high fever

¨  If there is excessive mucus that can cause choking

¨  Moves into chest and/or develops into bronchitis

¨  If you start to experience flu-like symptoms

¨  If it lasts more than a couple of weeks

¨  If you are concerned that it may be more serious

And it is important to know some fever guidelines as well. Get medical help immediately if;

¨  A baby < 3 months has a rectal temperature of ≥100.5 F (38 C) or an ear temp ≥99.5 F (37.5)

¨  If a child >3 months maintains a temperature of 103 F (39.4 C) & is unresponsive to homeopathic treatment

¨   Adult with a temperature >104 F (40.0 C) or a temperature of 101 F (38.3 C) that persists for >3 days

¨  Call your doctor immediately if the fever is accompanied by severe headache, stiff neck, swelling of the throat or mental confusion, or if you see unusual rashes or bite marks.

Most fevers go away within a few days. Fever helps the body fight infections by stimulating natural defense mechanisms; however a high fever in a child can cause dehydration, seizures or brain injury.

Many viruses thrive at cool temperatures. Your body produces a fever to try to kill the virus.
